Truckee Ranger District Roadside Hazardous Fuel Reduction
Project Overview
Basics
Truckee Ranger District Roadside Hazardous Fuel Reduction
Planning/Design
As a product of a Good Neighbor Agreement between the USDA Forest Service and the Nevada County Office of Emergency Services, this project will facilitate the treatment of roadside vegetation thereby creating shaded fuel breaks on a network of roads north of the town of Truckee. This project aligns with the District Ranger's Decision Memo, permitting the installation of a network of strategic fuel breaks on the Forest.
This phase of the project is slated to treat approximately 110ac along ~4.25mi of roadway in the National Forestland System. Subsequent phases may be executed pending additional funding.

Pillars of Resilience
Pillars of Resilience
In theory, shaded fuel breaks are intended to act as infrastructure for fire suppression activities. If this project reduces wildfire spread and severity by bolstering suppression activities, it can significantly reduce wildfire smoke emissions.
This project is located north of the town of Truckee, a hub for year-round recreational activities. This project has potential to facilitate prescribed fire operations by establishing anchor points or holding line in the Tahoe National Forest.
The intent of this project is to reduce spread and severity of uncontrolled wildfire, or serve as infrastructure for containing prescribed fire on the Tahoe National Forest. Either way, the targeted outcome is to proactively manage vegetation to a degree that mitigates catastrophic wildfire.
The prescription was developed to thin trees and shrubby vegetation and prepare retention species for inevitable fire. When fire returns to the landscape, the idea is to increase the chances for survival of the forested landscape.
In addition to the nearby town of Truckee, two large reservoirs are directly adjacent to the project area. These reservoirs host multiple recreational activities like boating, fishing, and camping. Promoting resilience of forests in this area are critical to ensuring access to recreational opportunities for larger metropolitan areas like Reno, NV and Sacramento, CA.
The project area feeds directly to the middle-fork Truckee river, which serves as drinking water for the city of Reno.
