Pillars of Resilience
Air Quality
Clean air is crucial for health, biodiversity, and ecosystems. Wildfires degrade air quality, causing respiratory illnesses, especially in children and outdoor workers, and disrupt recreation and economies. Land managers use prescribed fire to improve forest health and reduce wildfire risks.
The goal is to limit emissions mainly to low- and moderate-severity fires in wildland ecosystems, while forests improve air quality by capturing pollutants.
