SNPLMA Round 16 Sub Grant - NV Regional Fuels Reduction Project

Completed
This project has reduced hazardous fuels on lands within the Wildland Urban Interface Defense Zone of Incline Village, NV. 298 acres was treated using hand thinning, and understory burning. It has served to complement near-by fuels reduction projects, and previous treatments where 1st entry hand-thinning has been completed. The project is located near critical water treatment facilities, which are critical for fire-flow in the event of a wildfire, and potential evacuation centers should wildfire be active in the area.

Notes

01/09/2025 6:40 AM System In January of 2024 61 acres of pile burning was completed. This project is now complete with a total of 298 acres treated.
12/22/2023 10:32 AM System In 2023 47.56 acres were treated on the SNPLMA Rd. 16 NV Regional Fuels Reduction Project. A 33.46 acre hand thinning operation was completed as well as a 14.1 acre understory burn. All that remains to complete this project is pile burning which will be completed January-March of 2024.
01/14/2022 12:53 PM System Despite Covid and another exceptionally busy fire season, work progressed satisfactorily over Federal FY 2022. A total of 81.1 acres were treated with hand thinning over the year and 84.6 acres of piles were burned. Late in 2020 hand thinning was completed in four treatment units along the Diamond Peak Ridge (24.9), the PR/PW Boundary Unit (6.5), and in the NM5 Wagon Camp Units (14.9). The winter months allowed for pile burning in Lower NM4 (23.3), NM3 (45.2), T7 HOA Units (11.4), and in two small units that house power and water infrastructure (4.7). The latter part of Summer 2021 allowed for hand thinning at the 1400 Tunnel Creek Unit (1.3), and a partial treatment of the SM 6 & 8 Unit (13.8). An additional 19.7 acres were hand thinned along the primary utility line and a distribution line that serves the community. This corridor intersects the project boundary and connects to the power infrastructure unit mentioned above.
This brings total acres treated with hand thinning to 232.9 of the 286 base deliverable (81.4% complete). However, 65.0 of those acres await pile burning at the time of this writing. Two areas of approximately 40 acres each are prepared for understory prescribed fire. If fuel moisture and winds become favorable over the next 2-3 years, these important treatments will be carried out as part of this project. Additional units are prepared for hand thinning that will allow us to reach the base deliverable if we are unable to implement understory prescribed fire.
Public outreach was challenging again this year due the Covid-19 Pandemic. Outside visitors were not allowed in schools and considerations for safety led to the postponing of public outreach events as well. However, planning is underway to host an educational presentation with local students in May 2022. The field trip will take place later in 2022 or 2023.
01/14/2021 11:48 AM System Progress continued in 2020 on this project. Piles built in 2019 on 19 acres of private property were burned successfully in January 2020. Additional acres of piles from 2019 await burning at the time of this writing, but should be burned during the first quarter of 2021.
In 2020 hand thinning took place on 69.6 acres of private property and land owned by the Incline Village General Improvement District.

Additional hand thinning units have been established for the 2021 field season and work should proceed accordingly. The project is on target to meet end goal deliverables on time and on budget.

12/09/2019 2:02 PM System The NV Regional Fuels Reduction Project is comprised of seven property owners. In 2019 NLTFPD worked with 6 of the 7 land owners to complete hand thinning on 112 acres. The majority of this work (45.2 acres) occurred on property owned by Incline Village General Improvement District, followed by the T7 Property Owners Association where a total of 38.6 acres were treated. The remaining 28.1 acres treated in 2019 are owned by 4 separate landowners. An even cost share was provided by all owners. NLTFPD has begun planning with the largest landowner and hand thinning will begin on roughly 60 acres in 2020. Pile burning will be implemented on acres treated in 2019, and additional sites are being planned and prepared for understory prescribed fire throughout the project area.
01/14/2019 3:28 PM System Work has been planned for this project and implementation will begin in 2019.
